Auslan

At Rowellyn Park Primary School, we are proud to offer Auslan as a specialist subject for all students. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the language of the Deaf community in Australia and is a rich, visual language that uses hand shapes, movement, facial expression and body language to communicate meaning.

Through our Auslan program, students develop the skills to communicate using basic signs and phrases while gaining a deeper understanding of Deaf culture and the importance of inclusion, respect and accessibility. Lessons are interactive and engaging, encouraging students to listen with their eyes, express themselves in new ways and appreciate different forms of communication.

Learning Auslan supports students to become confident, empathetic and open-minded learners who value diversity and understand that language connects us all. Our program aligns with the Australian Curriculum and complements Rowellyn Park’s commitment to inclusive practices and global citizenship.

We will post regular videos and resources for our families to access and practice Auslan together in our ‘AUSLAN ZONE’.

Mr Joe Michaud is our Auslan specialist teacher.
